How Do You Network To Find a Job? The Tiered Approach to Job Search Networking

Updated: Nov 6

Networking is more crucial than ever in today's job market. Especially for marketers, as the Federal Reserve Bank of NYC recently reported that 50 to 60 percent of service firms and manufacturers use AI for marketing and advertising. This is the second most common use case, following "search for information".

The number of marketing jobs is shrinking, particularly in leadership roles. Networking is important not just for marketers and executives; anyone looking to expand their circle can benefit greatly over time. Navigating different tiers of contacts can elevate your networking game.

In this blog post, I will dive into a tiered approach to networking outreach, breaking down the various levels of contacts and strategies to engage them effectively.

Understanding the Tiered Approach

A tiered approach to networking categorizes contacts into four distinct levels. Each tier requires a different outreach strategy. By identifying where your contacts fit into these tiers, you can customize your communication for maximum impact.

Tier 1: Very Well-Known Contacts

Tier 1 contacts consist of individuals with whom you have a strong relationship—mentors, close colleagues, and friends who understand your work. These are the people who can not only endorse you but also advocate for you in a professional setting.

When reaching out to Tier 1 contacts, consider these effective strategies:

  • Personalized Communication: Send them a note when an event or piece of news on LinkedIn reminds you of a time or project you worked on together.

  • Value Exchange: Think about how you can help them. For example, if you read a market report or attended a workshop relevant to their work, share it.

  • Regular Updates: Keep them informed about your career. If you complete a certification or land a new role, let them know. Regular communication fosters long-term relationships. It doesn't have to be a weekly note; once a quarter is sufficient to stay top of mind.

Colleagues who know your work will be the fastest way for you to land an interview in a tough job market.
